Marriage Encounter originally started in Spain in 1962 at the initiative of Fr. Gabriel Calvo. In 1968 it was brought to New York. Under the leadership of Fr. Chuck Gallagher, its popularity spread all over the United States and all throughout the world.. It is found today in over 91 countries worldwide. The very first Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekend in the Philippines was in November 1976, at SAIDI House in Intramuros, Manila. Later on it found a home in Lipa, Batangas, where Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, then the Bishop of Lipa, welcomed the WME community. Thus, he is fondly called the titular head of the Worldwide Marriage Encounter in the Philippines.

From these roots in Batangas, the weekend experience has spread back to Manila, to Negros Occidental in 1979, and then to Cebu in 1980. In Cebu, weekends were organized in Balamban, Asturias, Poro, Camotes and Bohol. All these are under the jurisdiction of the Cebu Zone.

WME movements is now present in the following Zones: Bacolod, Dumaguete, Iloilo, Mindoro, Batangas, Manila, Cagayan de Oro, Antique, Basilan, and Pangasinan.

Worldwide Marriage Encounter is one of the most enriching, successful and widely accepted marriage enrichment in the world today. There are over 9 million couples who had experienced the beautiful meaning of the weekend in the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.  Now, these couples want to share M.E. to every couple possible because they found something really worth passing on.
